Steve the Humanitarian
Steve Longacre visits Mexico one or twice a year to help out with the orphans and the poor of that country. He has been to Rosarito, Ensenada and Tijuana numerous times. He helps bring school supplies, food and clothing to the orphanages. he also helps in construction projects (building and repairing orphanages and homes). He also ministers to street people in Berkeley and San Francisco a few times a year. He has been to Dublin Ireland working in the Dublin Mission for poor city children and drug and alcohol addicts. Steve finds that he always receives more from these trips than the ones he goes to help. "It is better to give than to receive." Steve says,"No matter how challenging this recession becomes we are extremely rich compared to the world's poor." Steve and his wife also teach in an after school program in a local school. It is a great way to reach out to the community and do our part to give back.
Steve the Traveler
Steve once called himself the "man without a country". As a child he was the son of a missionary and a world-famous linguist. He has been in 48 of the United States and lived in or visited: Mexico,
Guatemala, Columbia,The Phillipines, Papua, New Guinea, Japan, Hong Kong, Samoa, Australia, Bahamas, England,Ireland, Wales, Italy,Scotland, Switzerland, and France.
Living abroad has given him a love for travel and he and his wife travel whenever they can. It also equips him to understand people of other cultures and experience international cuisine, but do not take him to Taco Bell, he refuses to call that Mexican Food. He has lived in California half of his life, so he calls it home.
Steve the Musician and Song Writer
I bet you had no idea that Steve is a musician and song writer? He started playing guitar at age 11 and, yes wanted to join the Beatles. That never happened but he does have a photo of him crossing Abbey Road at their old studios. Sigh. His style of music has ranged from folk to almost punk- new wave- fast rock. He has been a member of Longacre and Young (folk duo from the 70's), Gentle warrior 80's rock band) and founder and front man for "Missionary Kid"- and did punk, Ramones kind of stuff in the clubs of Berkeley and Oakland and was interviewed by an underground rock station. He did donkey kicks on stage and car wheels all in spandex while singing in Missionary Kid. try that I dare you, you need to be a great shape. He has a video to prove it.
During the 80's he put out 2 record collections with Gentle Warrior, one solo album with Missionary Kid and one recording with the Missionary Kid Band and a bunch of real funky garage mixes.
In recent years he he has put out a CD with his 2 sons called "The Longacre Project" and a solo CD called "If Only". The only places he plays now is an occasional coffee house, the streets of Berkeley or San Francisco or in orphanages in Mexico or the half way house in Dublin, Ireland. He is no longer in a band and does not cover songs, so don't ask. He loves to record and still does so when he has the time and inspiration hits him. His last 2 CD projects are available for free. Just ask. He just does it for fun now and it's a great way to unwind after a day on a challenging loan.
